Zorki 1 - Transformation of an Ugly Duckling - The Rangefinder

To clean the rangefinder unit of your Zorki 1, Fed1, or Leica II camera, you'll need to remove the entire assembly from the body. If you have a later version of the Zorki 1 (such as the Z1 type 'e'), you may be able to detach the tubes of the viewfinder and rangefinder from the main unit, which makes the process easier. Since I was replacing the curtains, this step is already part of the process.

To access the viewfinder, it's easier to remove the beam splitter. There are three screws on the top of the rangefinder unit that hold it in place. Additionally, you'll need to remove the spring around the adjustment screw and push the lever to the front. This will create enough space to insert a cleaning tissue and a q-tip inside the unit.

I recommend using Zeiss lens cleaning tissues for this task. To clean the viewfinder, you can use a paper clip.

While you're cleaning the rangefinder unit, it's a good idea to replace the beam splitter if it's dirty or damaged. I ordered a replacement from nobbysparrow, which was described as a part for the Leica IIIa, but it also fit my Zorki 1 perfectly. Nobby has a video demonstrating the procedure, but it's important to note that the coated side of the new beam splitter should face the back of the camera.

Old and new beam splitter side by side.

The result - nice and clear viewfinder as well as clear sharp rf image.
